What is the Shower Smart trial ?

South East Water are undertaking a project in collaboration with the Victorian Department of Environment, Land and Water, the Monash Sustainable Development Institute and the University of Queensland to investigate options to help the Victorian water sector transition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 42% by 2025 and to net zero by 2050.

As part of the project, we want to understand how household shower use impacts hot water consumption and greenhouse gas emissions and what affect information on water and energy use can have on householder decisions about the length of showers they have.

South East Water is committed to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. Achieving greater energy savings through influencing customer water use behaviour represents an opportunity to demonstrate leadership and assist the Victorian Government achieve their net-zero ambition.

It has been estimated that supplying water to homes is only 10% of the total energy used in the urban water cycle, with 90% of the emissions coming from residential, commercial and industrial uses of the water. Heating water for showering and bathing and clothes washing are significant energy consumers and sources of greenhouse gas emissions.

Therefore, South East Water wants to support our customers, by helping them reduce their water and energy bills and help them reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.
